Self Contained Vehicles & Certification

Self contained vehicle installation and certification

In New Zealand, self-contained vehicles must have a ‘green sticker’ to freedom camp on most public land. This means they meet specific requirements for water supply, wastewater storage, a fixed toilet, and other sanitation needs. These standards help protect the environment and ensure responsible camping practices.

The self-contained vehicle green sticker requirements in New Zealand ensure that vehicles used for freedom camping have adequate facilities to manage waste and minimize environmental impact.

To obtain a green sticker, a vehicle must meet specific standards for:

  • Fresh Water Storage: A minimum of 4 litres per person per day for at least 3 days.
  • Wastewater Storage: A minimum of 4 litres per person per day for at least 3 days, with a minimum capacity of 12 liters.
  • Toilet: A portable or fixed toilet with a minimum capacity of 3 litres per person.
  • Sink: A sink with a water trap connected to a sealed wastewater tank.
  • Rubbish Storage: A sealed rubbish container.

Inspection Process

Mike, as an inspector, carries out verifying that the vehicle meets these requirements. This includes:

  • Checking Documentation: Reviewing any documentation related to the vehicle’s self-containment features.
  • Physical Inspection: Inspecting the water tanks, toilet, sink, and rubbish storage to ensure they meet the required standards and are correctly installed.
  • Testing: Conducting tests to verify the capacity of the tanks and the functionality of the plumbing system.
  • Certification: If the vehicle passes the inspection, you will issue a green sticker and certification, which is valid for four years.

Important Notes:

  1. The green sticker system replaces the previous blue warrant system.
  2. All vehicles must be certified under the new green warrant system by June 7, 2025.
  3. Inspections must be carried out by certified authorities.
